EN: "St. Peter's Church is a religious building in the Swiss city of Basel. It is dedicated to St. Peter and has been serving after some conversions and renovations as a Reformed Church since 1529.
The building aligned in east-west direction is located on a hill in Greater Basel's Old Town, where Petersgasse and Kellergässlein meet.
At this location there was already a predecessing church, presumably of the 9th Century. Until 1233 the church was renewed and extendded as a parish church and monastery. The Basel earthquake of 1356 badly damaged the building, it had to be rebuilt. In doing so the choir was redesigned.
The main section, called "Leutkirche", was planned according to the guidelines of the mendicant orders and completed before 1388. The choir stalls are dated 1494.
A spacious nave with whitewashed walls is separated by two aisles with light sandstone arches. The walls are decorated with rich pictures and cycles of paintings. In the south aisle is the work burial of Christ created in 1830 and in the "Keppenbachkapelle" the well-preserved mural of the Annunciation (ca. 1400). Das in Ost-West-Richtung ausgerichtete Gotteshaus befindet sich auf einem Felsen in der Grossbasler Altstadt, wo die Petersgasse und das Kellergässlein zusammentreffen.
An dieser Stelle gab es bereits einen kirchlichen Vorgängerbau, der vermutlich aus dem 9. Jahrhundert stammte. Bis 1233 wurde das damalige Gotteshaus als Pfarrkirche und Chorherrenstift ausgebaut und erneuert. Das Basler Erdbeben von 1356 fügte dem Gebäude schwere Schäden zu, es musste neu errichtet werden. Dabei wurde der Chor umgestaltet.
Der Hauptteil, genannt «Leutkirche», wurde vor nach den Richtlinien der Bettelordenskirchen geplant und vor 1388 fertiggestellt. Das Chorgestühl ist auf das Jahr 1494 datiert.
Ein geräumiges Hauptschiff mit geweissten Wänden wird von zwei Seitenschiffen durch leichte Sandsteinbögen getrennt. Die Wände sind mit Bilderzyklen und Wandmalereien reichhaltig versehen. Im südlichen Seitenschiff befindet sich das um 1830 geschaffene Werk Grablegung Christi und in der «Keppenbachkapelle» das gut erhaltene Wandbild die Verkündigung an Maria (um 1400).
