The Memorial Gardens were created to acknowledge the valuable contribution made by volunteers, emergency service works and military service men and women. The Memorial Flame artwork situated at the northern extremity of the Memorial Gardens, has been placed in remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties.
The inscription reads
"Malaya and Borneo
Elements of the Australian military were deployed on operations in Malaya during the Emergency 1948 - 1960 to counter communist terrorists and again in Borneo 1965 - 66 during "confrontation" with Indonesia.
Both campaigns were physically and mentally demanding and conducted in a harsh jungle environment, and provided Australia with a sound core of experienced junior leaders in counter insurgency techniques for subsequent operations in Vietnam."
