The Vietnam War Memorial commemorates those who died or were killed in the Vietnam War, and those who were wounded in the conflict.
The Memorial Gardens were created to acknowledge the valuable contribution made by volunteers, emergency service works and military service men and women. The Memorial Flame artwork situated at the northern extremity of the Memorial Gardens, has been placed in remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties.
The inscription reads
"South Vietnam 1962 - 1973
Approximately 50000 Australian Navy, Army and Airforce servicemen and women including conscripts served their nation in a controversial conflict, where more than 500 paid the supreme sacrifice.
Vietnam was Australia's longest war fought in a hot, humid environment against a determined guerilla and main force enemy.
This plaque is dedicated to those young Australians who did not come home and those who suffered."
