In 1847, 104 immigrants from the Dutch and German lowlands crossed the Atlantic and made their way across the Great Lakes to this place. The settlers called it Graafschap. In ’48 the first log Church was built.

In 1862 it was decided to build a church. The current sanctuary was completed in 2000.
On April 8, 1857, Graafschap was one of two churches which seceded from Classis Holland of the Reformed Church. On February 8, 1857 the name Ware Hollandsche Gereformeerde Kerk was chosen for the new denomination which eventual became the Christian Reformed Church.
