The inscription on the plaque reads

"25 POUNDER ARTILLERY GUN/HOWITZER

The 25 pounder was the allies' most widely used artillery piece during the Second World War. Indeed, the gun remained in service throughout Commonwealth nations until 1960's, when they were phased out in favour of the 105 millimetre Howitzer.

Initially the British made guns were simply old World War One 18 pounder, bored out to permit them to fire heavier shell. Then, as more and more stocks were called for, the guns were made to the new specifications. The guns were manufactured by the "Ordnance Group in various parts of Great Britain and widely distributed to Commonwealth nations, including Australia, Canada, India and South Africa, as the primary artillery piece of the day.

The 25 Pounder has a calibre of 3.45 inches (or 87.6 millimetres), a maximum range of 12,250 metres and could fire high explosive, armour piercing, smoke, and illumination and "shot" rounds.

The gun weighs 1,800 kilograms, has a length of 2.4 metres and a width of 1.79 metres.

The Commonwealth Government presented the gun you see displayed here, to the RSL Sub Branch of Cairns on the 6th of April 1974. The weapon come from the 5/11th Field Regiment and is believed to be the "Alpha" or number one gun of that Regiment's three batteries of six guns.

Councillor Kevin Byrne, Mayor of Cairns, presented this plaque to the Cairns RSL Sub Branch, March 2007"
