Located just off Hodson Rd along a small one lane dirt road (Hays Cemetery Rd) is a small, pioneer cemetery containing about 50 graves of some of the first pioneers and settlers to this area. Although this cemetery is smnall, it contains a some of the most unusual graves I've ever encountered, making this place one of my favorite discoveries. For instance, one grave reads 'CATTLE BUYER KILLED FOR HIS MONEY 1800'. I'm assuming the year 1800 is in error since this part of the country wasn't settled until in over 50 years after that date, but it is an unusual grave nonetheless. Another grave located in the NW corner of the cemetery reads 'EMIGRANT BABY BURIED AT NIGHT FOR SAFETY'. I do know that it was common for Native Americans to dig up white settlers' graves and steal the bones, so I'm to assume that the practice of burying loved ones at night was a common practice when the first white settlers arrived in this area. Another grave is for Isaac Fredenburg Jr. who was a private and fought in place of another man in the War of 1812. He emigrated to Oregon and settled here and was granted land from a war act. Yet another grave is for a woman, Barbara Jeanne Barnett who fought in the Bay of Pigs (Cuba) in the Navy. Pretty awesome. Of course there are the graves of the Hays family as well as a few graves of the Hay family. Were they the same family and just removed the 's' from their names? There is also the grave of Jacob Gall, for whom this cemetery is also named after.
