The Priory Hotel is a Grade II listed building in the heart of old Caerleon and can be found in the High Street opposite the Roman Baths Museum car park.
It is of apparently medieval and early C16th origins, some of the rubble walling seems to survive from this period, but it was altered over the next 200 years so that what we see today is almost entirely early/mid C19th and later. Its overall character is of a Tudor Revival of c1840 which has been overlaid by many changes made necessary by the upgrading of the building to a late C20th hotel. It is said to have been built on the site of a Cistercian priory of probably C12th date. It was a private house of the Morgan family from 1450 to 1835 and has been a hotel since the mid C20th.
The building is constructed of local red sandstone conglomerate rubble with freestone dressings and with Welsh slate roofs with two sets of red brick chimney stacks. There is a group of three running front/back just off the south wing apex and a single stack on the slope behind the apex above the front entrance. All are square in section and built on the diagonal, about 2m tall with dentile feature round the top chamfer. Unusually the group of three are not co-joined. There is another group of four stacks at the rear-left of the Priory and a single stack mid-range, I was unable to take pictures of these, visiting waymarkers, your photos will be most welcome.
