Fogarty Park is a large park area with a stage for concerts, events and expositions, most of which are free of charge to the public. The seating capacity of the area is over 6,000 people.
Fogarty Park, together with the adjacent Cairns Esplanade precinct, is a world-class redevelopment which was officially opened in March 2003. It was designed to accommodate major concert events.
The inscription on the plaque reads
"FOGARTY PARK
This park was named after Mr R.F.G. Fogarty, Chairman of Northern Australian Breweries (now Carlton & United Breweries) who, in 1965, presented a fountain to the City of Cairns. At the time the Cairns Brewery was an important part of the economy of Cairns. On 13th October 1965, when making the presentation, Mr Fogarty said, "All great cities are endowed with fountains and Cairns is destined to become one of the big cities of Australia". The fountain was removed as part of the reclamation and refurbishment of the area, which included the installation of lhe Lagoon, completed in 1003.
