Das Bauerndorf Großwolde wurde im 12. Jahrhundert aufgrund des steigenden Grundwassers auf die höher gelegene Geest verlegt. In diesem Zuge wurde auch die Vorgängerkirche aus Backsteinen abgetragen und am heutigen Standort neu errichtet. Nach der Reformation wechselte die Gemeinde um 1560 zum reformierten Bekenntnis.
An der Westseite der Kirche ist ein gedrungener Glockenturm angebaut, die heutigen rundbogigen Fenster wurden später eingebrochen. Im östlichen Bereich befindet sich ein Hagioskop in Nähe zum früheren Altarbereich, das den Leprakranken im Mittelalter den Blick auf die heilige Eucharistiefeier gewährte.
The farming village Großwolde was transferred to the higher up Geest in the 12th century, due to rising groundwater. In this context, the original brick church was demolished and rebuilt at its present location. After the Reformation, the community moved around 1560 to the Reformed confession.
Attached to the west side of the church is a squat bell tower, today's round-arched windows were broken in later. In the eastern area is a Hagioscope in proximity to the former altar area, which granted the lepers the view of the Holy Eucharist in the Middle Ages.
