Now used as a non-denominational church for services and weddings, St Mary's by the Sea is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992. It was constructed in 1914 replacing an earlier Catholic church at Port Douglas, which had been destroyed by the cyclone of March 1911.
The inscription reads
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
St. Augustines built in 1880. First priest father John Cani. Extensively damaged in the 1911 cyclone. Rebuilt 1911 and in 1988 was relocated to this present position where it was completely renovate. It is used today as a non-denominational church for services & weddings.
