The Town of Dickinson, named after Daniel S. Dickinson, was formed in 1890 from the town of Chenango.

The first settlement of the Binghamton area was in the Town of Dickinson. A favorite park, Otseningo, SUNY Broome the community college, and the county jail are all in the town.
