This station, A U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, is located in the village of Hawleyville, in Newtown, CT. It is set in a sill at the bottom of the north abutment of a road overpass (Farrell Road) over the former New Haven Railroad, now owned by the Providence & Worcester Railroad, and the Housatonic Railroad. The original description:

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1935 1 MI W FROM HAWLEYVILLE. 1.0 MILE WEST ALONG THE NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD FROM THE STATION AT HAWLEYVILLE, FAIRFIELD COUNTY, AT HIGHWAY OVERPASS 87.23, IN THE TOP OF THE NORTH ABUTMENT, 18 FEET WEST OF THE EAST END, 6 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTH RAIL, AND ABOUT LEVEL WITH THE TRACK. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED X 11 1935.

First off, there is no longer a railroad station in Hawleyville. I would say now that the overpass is approximately 0.5 mile west from the CT Rt. 25 grade crossing.

The abutment description is ambiguous - since the bridge is built into a rock cut, the 'top' of the abutment is actually under the roadway, no place for a disk. Once you understand that the mark is about level with the track, that's when you will notice the sill.

Approaching the mark from Farrell Road is next to impossible. Your best bet is to park in the commuter lot on Rt. 25 and pack to the overpass, but I will caution you - As stated earlier in the post, the railroad here is active. At least two trains travel the road daily. That's not much, but it is all you need to know. The bridge is on a blind curve, and the disk is only 6 feet away from the north rail. In short, the disk is in a very hazardous spot, you don't want to be there when a train comes around the bend. Be safe, do the right thing.
