When California Historic Marker No. 654 was damaged during such an attempt, a Sacramento monument maker donated his time to recreate the history by sandblasting around the letters.
This marker recognized the site of the First Jewish Synagogue owned by a congregation on the Pacific Coast.
The original marker is shown WM397V.
