1911: The Austin Flood is written by Paul W. Heimel. It is filled with photos and interviews of several survivors. The Austin Dam failed in September of 1911 and wiped most of Austin Pennsylvania off the map. Many ran for higher ground, but some ignored the warnings.
This book explains why it failed and who was at fault. The remains of the dam are still in place with a memorial to those who perished on that horrific night. If you visit, also drive south to see the ruins of the Bayless Paper mill, which survived the flood only to burn down many years later.
