In C. E. Conrad Cemetery in Kalispell is a large white marble war memorial, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the service of their country.

The memorial stands on the brow of a hill near the eastern edge of the cemetery surrounded by military graves. It is unmistakable for its size and its bright white color in full sun. On the memorial are carved the names of all the soldiers who lost their lives in the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
This is a two sided memorial and on the front, in the centre, are inscribed the words:

WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES

OF THEIR COUNTRY
The World War I Memorial contains the name of thirty-six Flathead County residents lost in that conflict. This memorial is on the left half of the front side of the memorial, (on the northeast side) below the Spanish-American War memorial.
The Spanish-American War Memorial contains the name of the single Flathead County resident lost in that conflict, Fred W. Wheaton. This memorial is on the left half of the front side of the memorial, (on the northeast side) above the World War I memorial.
The Korean War Memorial contains the names of eleven Flathead County residents lost in that conflict. This memorial is on the left half of the rear side of the memorial, (on the southwest side) along with the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom memorials. Their names follow:

The Vietnam War Memorial is on the rear side of the memorial, (on the southwest side) along with the Korean War and Persian Gulf memorials. It lists the names of twenty five fallen soldiers of that conflict.
The Desert Storm Memorial contains the name of the single Flathead County resident lost in that conflict, Mark R. Cronquist, while the Operation Iraqi Freedom Memorial contains the names of two fallen Flathead County residents, Edward Matthew Saltz and Kane F. Funke. This memorial is on the rear side of the memorial, (on the southwest side) along with the Korean War and Vietnam War memorials.
The largest memorial is the World War II memorial, which occupies the right half of the front, northeast, side of the memorial. It lists the names of 120 Flathead residents who did not return from the war.
Conrad Cemetery is the largest cemetery serving the Kalispell area, with over 16,000 interments. The cemetery was begun in 1902 with the purchase of 104 acres by C.E. Conrad's wife Lettie Conrad immediately after his death from diabetes. C.E. Conrad was the founder of the city of Kalispell.

Description of Memorial: This is a large, wide white marble memorial consisting of three flat slabs the centre being much narrower and taller than the two flanking ones. The dedication inscription is on the centre portion, with the individual war memorials occupying three of the four sides of the outer slabs. In total the memorial is about twelve feet tall and sixteen to eighteen feet wide. Occupying the brow of a hill, it is visible for quite a distance.
