Thomas Fisher weas born in Rochester around 1781, the son of a printer and bookseller. He worked for the East India Company for some 46 years. He was an accomplished draughtsman and antiquarian and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Between 1812 and 1816 Fisher published 95 plates of his drawings of monumental and other remains in Bedfordshire.

The today photo of Dunstable Street is taken slightly North of where Fisher would have been, however this is necessary due to a pelican crossing that would otherwise dominate the view. Several of the houses can still be identified, in particular the old forge to the left of the picture with its ball finial on the roof. The painting, oil on canvas, can be seen on Wikigallery.
