Massachusetts Memorial This bronze statue on a boulder honors the Massachusetts troops that fought with the 9th Corps of the Army of the Tennessee.

The Massachusetts State Memorial is located on Grant Avenue at Grant Circle. It was the first state memorial erected within Vicksburg National Military Park. The monument cost $4,500 and was dedicated on November 14, 1903. The sculptor was Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson, and is mounted on a 15-ton boulder from Massachusetts. The three regiments from Massachusetts are listed on the memorial.

Short Significance Description:

The Massachusetts Monument contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criteria A because it represents the national movement among veterans and related groups to commemorate major Civil War battlefields.

Short Physical Description

Monument consists of 20" x 48" x 108" bronze of soldier on the march mounted on a 1 ton 72" x 72" granite boulder of MA origin. Bronze plaque attached to boulder lists MA units & incorporates state coat of arms and IX Corps badge.
