"Denver Public Works is proud to announce that two of the buildings on the Downtown Denver Justice Center campus have received LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, ratings from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse received a Gold LEED ranking and the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center received a Silver LEED score, just shy of Gold. The Post Office and parking garage facility also located on the campus received a LEED Silver award after its completion in 2008.
In concept, design, and execution the Denver Justice Center complex is a sustainable site. Denver Public Works worked with sustainability and energy consultant Ambient Energy and Denver-based architecture firms Klipp, OZ and NAC Architecture (formerly AR7) to ensure the campus met LEED requirements. These buildings demonstrate the elements of sustainable site selection and material use, water and energy efficiency, and innovative green design features.
The campus is near public transportation and bike amenities are also provided. Additionally, the buildings are expected to last more than 100 years, as they were built with materials that are both durable and maintainable. Denver Public Works employs a wide range of policies that ensure both buildings maintain their sustainable elements and reduce building occupants’ exposure to contaminants that adversely impact the indoor environment. Sustainable operations and maintenance help extend the good work completed during design and construction throughout the life of the building.
Strategies that contributed to the Gold LEED certification of the Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse include:
49% of indoor potable water use reduction; 52% of exterior potable water use reduction
5480 tons of construction materials were recycled instead of being placed in a landfill (50% of total construction and demolition waste)
17% of materials used in construction were produced regionally (within 500 miles of the site)
28.8% savings on energy bills by using efficient lighting and heating systems
Natural light is provided in most of the courtroom spaces" (excerpted from (
