Wooden model of St Mary's church, East Bergholt

The church of St Mary's in East Bergholt will forever be associated with painter John Constable. There are numerous paintings. This model dates from well after his period, however no plaque or information is available to attribute this fine model.

Unlike most towerless churches which are generally due to disrepair and eventual collapse, the tower of this church was never completed. It was started in 1525 with funding from Cardinal Wolsey, but his sudden fall from power meant that funds ran out, and work ceased in 1530.
