This plaque is dedicated to Wilder’s Brigade, commanded by Col. John Thomas Wilder in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 20, 1863 at 11:30 A.M. There are nine monuments to Wilder’s Brigade on the battlefield.

Text on second plaque reads:

Early on the 20th the brigade was posted on the east slope of the ridge west of the Crawfish Springs Road with a 39th Indiana Mounted Infantry of Willich’s Brigade on its left. Upon the attack of Hindman’s Division, upon the Union troops near Widow Glenn’s Wilder charged, dismounted, upon Hindman’s left flank, and forced the left of Mabigault’s Brigade back across the Lafayette road. Subsequently the brigade withdrew to the ridge west of the Crawfish Springs Road, and later to Chattanooga Valley, where it covered the withdrawal of troops and transportation to Chattanooga.


Casualties during the battle: killed 13; wounded 94; captured or missing18; total 125.
