The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

Bridges are often built into locks because they are the narrowest part of the canal and so the bridge is cheaper and easier to build.

This bridge is at the western end of Granary Wharf built as a transshipment area for loading and unloading goods onto the boats and provides vehicular access to the wharf.

The bridge is an English Heritage Grade II Listed building. "Road bridge over canal. 1770-77, parapet probably rebuilt c1816. Ashlar. Single segmental arch with vermiculated rustication to voussoirs and buttresses. Parapet above band at road level has incised plain panels. Walling at south end of west parapet links to the Canal Company Office (qv); the parapets were probably built when the office was completed, after the linking of the canal through to Liverpool in 1816. Although locks on this canal are numbered from Leeds, the bridges are numbered from Liverpool. Although Leeds is the start of the canal this bridge has the highest number on the canal and depending on your point of view is therefore the last bridge on the canal.
