A simple granite slab with several plaques can be found on the Eastern edge of grounds of the Freestone County Courthouse in Fairfield, TX. It was placed in honor of those who served Freestone County and paid the ultimate sacrifice while on duty.

As of the date of this waymark's posting, the names of the three peace officers inscribed on the plaques are:

James B Rogers 11-27-1836 ~ 04-13-1872 Sheriff
Bragg Dunbar 02-05-1870 ~ 08-09-1918 Constable
Tim Willard 10-02-1895 ~ 04-19-1928 Special Texas Ranger

Further research revealed the following:

(1) Freestone County Sheriff James Bonner Rogers was shot and killed by horse thieves he had arrested several months earlier in 1872. Sheriff Rogers was summoned to a stable; when he and another sheriff arrived, he was shot and killed. The other sheriff was able to return fire killing one suspect; the second suspect was captured a short time later and executed. Sheriff Rogers had been with the agency for three years and was survived by his wife and four children.

(2) Constable Bragg Dunbar was killed in 1918 while arresting robbery and burglary suspects.

(3) Special Texas Ranger Tim S. Willard was shot and killed in 1928 while raiding an illegal whisky distillery.

The names of all 3 peace officers can also be found both the Texas Peace Officers Memorial in Austin, TX and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.: (visit link)
