Located along Hwy 161 (State Line Rd) is a vista point pullout that contains a number of interpretive displays that highlight the geology, history and local flora and fauna found here within the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. One particular display mentions a 'FIRST' of it's kind and reads:

HISTORY OF THE KLAMATH BASIN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

The refuge was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, and was our nation's first waterfowl refuge. Over 275 species of birds have been recorded using the complex, and over 60 species of mammals including antelope and big horn sheep have been observed in the area. Also, it has one of the largest concentrations of wintering bald eagle in the world and is a major staging area for snow geese.

There is another parking area further SW of this vista point that also contains numerous interpretive displays, one of which refers to this 'FIRST'.

Our family enjoyed our drive through the refuge and were able to spot some bald eagles although they weren't on refuge property but on private farmland. Too funny.

Date of FIRST: 01/01/1908
