MURPHY LAKE (L), 23.6 m., is long, narrow, and bordered with dense tamarack growth. A State game preserve surrounds it. There is an improved campground on its shore.
Montana: A State Guide Book, 1939

The Fortine District of the Kootenai National Forest was administered from the Ant Flat Ranger station from 1904 until 1963, when the administrative site was moved to Murphy Lake and the district was renamed the Fortine Ranger District.

Though the campground at Murphy Lake was already in place in 1939, this ranger station was not. The campground remains, improved and updated over the years. It was not yet open for the season hen we visited.

Murphy Lake is a prime fishing destination for largemouth bass and northern pike. Sitting in heavy forest, this small lake and its surrounding area is home to a variety of birds, including loons, bald eagles and osprey.

Landlocked, with no outflow, the lake is fed by Dickey Creek, Murphy Creek and Laughing Water Creek. The lake itself covers 141 acres and is slightly less than a mile long, sitting at an elevation of 2,999 feet.
