Indiana cities and counties were heavily involved in the Civil War, and their monument are also massive. The monument was erected on the site used for recruitment during the Civil War.

Proper Description:
"Full-length figure of a Civil War flagbearer stands atop a tall obelisk. He wears a uniform and coat; a scabbard hangs at his proper right side. The obelisk is punctuated by a series of horizontal lines and ends in a raised platform. Each side of the platform is accessed by a series of steps. At the four corners of the platform are raised pedestals. A full-length bronze figure of a Civil War soldier stands atop each pedestal. On the southeast corner is the figure of an artilleryman. He wears a uniform and holds a ramrod vertically with his proper right hand. On the southwest corner is the figure of a sailor. He holds a rope with both hands; the rope is coiled beside his feet. The figure on the northwest corner is of a cavalryman. He holds a riding crop in his hands at waist level. He wears a pistol in a holster on his proper left side and a canteen on the back proper right side of his belt. On the northeast corner is the figure of an infantryman. He is reaching for the hilt of a sword with his proper left hand; the tip of the sword touches the ground. A supply pouch is attached to the back of his belt." ~ Smithsonian American Art Museum
