This Mississippi, African Descent, Monument is located east and south of the Kansas Monument at mile 4.4 of the Tour Road. It has a base of black granite with a large bronze plaque in the front. Atop the base is a large bronze statue with three African American soldiers. Two are helping a wounded comrade walk to aid. The figure on the left is using a musket with a fixed bayonet as a walking stick. According to the National Park Service: (

This monument was dedicated on February 14, 2004 at a cost of $325,000. The artist was Dr. J. Kim Sessums. The 9- ft tall bronze sculpture on a black granite base is the first monument ever placed in a National Park to honor African American Civil
War soldiers.
The text of the plaque reads:
“Commemorating the Service of the 1st and 3d Mississippi Infantry, African Descent and All Mississippians of African Descent Who Participated in the Vicksburg Campaign”
