Located in the heart of Eugene Pioneer Cemetery is this obelisk headstone for James and Elizabeth Ebbert. Their headstone reads
ELIZABETH B.
WIFE OF
JAMES EBBERT
BORN
SEPT. 11, 1830
DIED
JULY 29, 1902
I cannot say. I will not say
That she is dead~she is just away
With a frindly smile and a wave of the hand
She has wandered into an unknown land
and left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since she
lingers there.
JAMES A. EBBERT
BORN
MAR. 25, 1831
DIED
SEPT. 2, 1915
AT REST
I believe this obelisk headstone to be the tallest here in this cemetery. I was very fortunate to be able to decipher the poetic inscription under Elizabeth's name from a photo posted on FindaGrave.com and was able to do some research on it. I discovered that this inscription is part of a longer poem written by James Whitcomb Riley titled Away. A few of the official words of Riley's poem have been changed in the headstone inscription. You can read the full poem here.
