Created by Cliff Axelsen, the sculpture is located on Marine Parade in Manly. The design is organic in form carved out of a rock which fell from the towering cliff above.
Cliff Axelsen is an Armidale based sculptor who has worked on a
number of community sculpture projects and Sculpture by the Sea.
The plaque reads:
Australia 1788 - 1988
This "Shell and Wave" Sculpture
"Is a tribute to the Surf lifesavers from 3 Manly Beaches
who have carried out 41,000 Surf Rescues to date"
designed and created by

assisted by 1988 Students of Art and Design
Seaforth College of Technical and further Education
as a Bicentennial Project to commemorate the
Nation's Bicentenary in 1988.
