The picnic commemorated the original Federation picnic held at the Showground on 8th January 1901 to celebrate the Inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia. The brass plaque sits at the front of the Grand Stand which pre-dated federation.

The Berry Historical Society is a group of volunteers who organised the event. The society runs the Berry Museum which is in the main street. The Showground is the centrepiece of Berry.

This plaque commemorates the Federation of Centenary Picnic held at the Berry Showground on Saturday 12th May 2001.

The original picnic held on 8th January 1901 to celebrate then Inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia was recreated in this event with the arrival of a heritage train, a community Grand Parade through Berry and Showground events.

Official guests were Greg Watson Mayor of the City of Shoalhaven, Richard Amery, State Minister for Agriculture, Matthew Brown MLA for Kiama & Joanna Gash Federal Member for Gilmore.
