Hope the Cow - Amherst, MA - Figurative Public Sculpture on Waymarking.com

A life-size cow statue, named “Hope,” was installed in front of the building housing the Loose Goose Cafe on September 7, 2013. The sculpture is also a giant piggy-bank that is a repository for donations in support of Craig’s Place, a homeless shelter in Amherst.

The creation of Hope the Cow was inspired by a film documentary by Counterfeit Cow Production’s called “Homeless in a College Town”, which profiles the homeless people of Amherst, MA, the home to the University of Massachusetts. Sari Gagnon, the director, and Matt Heron Duranti, the producer of the documentary wanted to do something more permanent to help the homeless. They contracted with local artist Kamil Peters in October 2012 to fabricate Hope. Peters created the cow from recycled metal objects.

Hope is a rather tall cow. She is about 6' high by 6.5' long by 2.5' wide. She is painted brown and white and patterned like a Holstein cow. A brass bell around her neck is fastened with a blue bicycle chain lock. Donations are accepted through her open mouth. Whimsically, her front legs resemble that of a man wearing black pants and large black shoes. The rear legs the bare legs of a female wearing black high heel shoes.
