Located within Alton Baker Park is a new area designated in 2013 as the Nobel Peace Park. In 2013, the Nobel Laureate committee decided to open the United States’ first Nobel Peace Park here in Eugene. This park contains a winding pathway with placards that highlight 20 Nobel Laureates and three United States groups who have all won the Nobel Peace Prize, one of them being Martin Luther King, Jr. The MLK placard reads:

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., minister and civil rights activist, was a powerful orator and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He had a significant impact on race relation in the United States. In 1964, Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in ending racial segregation and racial discrimination through non-violent civil disobedience. King's non-violent tactics have inspired others all over the world as an alternative to violence.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

This park provides a nice, tranquil setting for visitors to come and appreciate those individuals' efforts that are highlighted here on these placards.

Civil Right Type: Race (includes U.S. Civil Rights movement)
