The hay press is just behind the fence which runs along the footpath of George Street. These presses operated in the 1940s & were powered by a small engine (missing) attached above the front axle. Farm workers fed cut hay into the press & through mechanical action, a twined bale was produced.

The company H.V.McKay was founded by Australian Hugh V. McKay in the 1890s. In 1930 it merged with the Canadian company Massey Harris's Australian operations to become H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. In 1955, this company was in turn absorbed into the Massey-Ferguson global entity becoming Massey Ferguson (Aust.) Limited.

This press was manufactured in Sunshine, a town near Melbourne. You can see the company's name & location on the side of the press.

I found a photograph of a Stationary Hay Press in action on the Museum Victoria website here: (visit link)

You can see the large number of workers involved in making hay.
