In 1962, Hamburg faced one of the worst floods of the river Elbe by water that was pressed into the river from the north sea. In the city alone, 315 people lost their lifes. All over the city, there are still markers to commemorate this tragedy.

Die Sturmflut von 1962 hat sich ins Gedächtnis der Stadt eingebrannt und braucht als Ereignis hier nicht nacherzählt zu werden. Insgesamt starben in Hamburg 315 Menschen. Nach der Katastrofe wurde der Deichschutz bis heute laufend umfassend verbessert.
