The Bernstein and its surroundings was therefore expelled from the cities of Gaggenau and Bad Herrenalb because of the unique for the region rock formation and geological-tectonic and naturalistic importance by decree on November 5, 2007 laminary natural monument and is under the reserve number 82160150001 for the local council Freiburg out.
As the origin of the name component Bern the Old High German bero is believed the former word for bear. Bears were still home to the late Middle Ages in the northern Black Forest. Stone indicates the boulder located at the top.
The main rock of Bernstein has a volume of 200 m³. It is accessible via a stone staircase created in 1864 and offers a stunning panoramic view. On a clear day the view extends far beyond the front Murg Valley, z. B. the Notre Dame cathedral in 54 km distance to the Vosges in 60-120 km away, to the mountains of the Palatinate Forest in 45-75 km away. The visible horizon length is then up to 180 km.
