Phoenix, with an arrow pointing west, is on the side of Usery Mountain in Mesa Arizona. The sign was created as a Boy Scout project in the 1950's directing pilots to the Phoenix airport. At the time the population was significantly lighter and the airport smaller so the arrow was a beacon directing pilots 30 miles west to the airport.
The sign is made of whitewashed rocks. It was repainted in the 1990's.
