The Fábrica da Baleia do Castelo is located on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores; it was a typical Azorean whaling complex and can be accessed by a steep footpath, full of sharp turns, known as "the turns of the Castle".
Although it is in ruins, it is still possible to observe old platforms, water tanks, tanks and house boats.
On the island of Santa Maria, there are records of whaling in the 1890s, which can be grouped into three major phases:
1896 to 1906 - at the initiative of São Miguel industrial Amâncio Júlio Cabral and some whalers from other islands, operating with only two boats, with considerable presence of whalers coming from Cape Verde and characterized by primitive methods;
1937-1949 - on the initiative of Roberto Lopes de Mendonça, becoming the "Companhia Balieira Mariense";
1957-1966 - period of modernization and decline.
