This traffic island along the former Trans-Canada Highway through Carp was originally a communal meeting place with two wells drawing some of the best well water around. Known locally as "The Old Well", it has a wooden handle.
The open area is/was maintained by the local Women's Institute; hence the sign "For Home and Country". The Carp BIA has voted to support revamping this traffic island into a municipal park with the aim of installing a Cenotaph to honour those men and women from the West Carleton area who served in various wars.

The hand-operated pump will be remain visible on this site, as some of the fallen would have used this well.
