According to legend, the old church in Wommelshausen was built at a miraculous spring. The story says that a noble lady once drank from this fountain and then fell in love with a stupid peasant lad. Because of that, her father was so enraged that he had the source filled up.

After a new church in Wommelshausen was consecrated in 1965 and the old church began to deteriorate, it was purchased by the county and completely restored in 2000.
