At the north end of Nucleus Avenue, along Railroad Street, this little park is an ongoing project of the city of Columbia Falls. So far it contains the Shay, an information sign telling of the Shay and its restoration and a small picnic pavilion with a picnic table within. They still have plenty of room to expand as finances and necessity permits.
Depot park was located and named for the fact that Columbia Falls' railway depot once stood here. It once stood about 100 feet north of the sign and the Shay Locomotive.
Remembering the Shay
In 1964, with help from many local volunteers, the 1904 Shay Locomotive was restored for the Centennial celebration of Montana as a territory. This locomotive, which pulled its short train of flatcars loaded with logs from the woods to a sawmill at an average speed of 12 mph, was used for logging in the Swan Valley and north of Half Moon. Today it is the pride of residents and the attraction of tourists here in Depot Park.
