"Art Institute of Chicago Names New Director
By KATE TAYLOR AUGUST 24, 2011 12:57 PM

The Art Institute of Chicago has named Douglas Druick, a curator there for 26 years and the chairman of two departments, as its new director, the institute announced Wednesday. Mr. Druick, 66, has been the acting director since June 30, when the former director, James Cuno, departed to become the president and chief executive of the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles.

Reached in the director’s office on Wednesday morning, Mr. Druick, who previously led the prints and drawings and European painting and sculpture departments, said that he felt his intimate knowledge of the museum gave him “a very good perspective of the ways we can grow.” He said that his goals included changing gallery installations, hiring a new education director, pursuing the production of online catalogs and expanding the ways that technology is used to provide both on-site and remote access to the collection.

Mr. Druick described the institute’s financial position as sound, saying that its endowment was up almost 24 percent over the last fiscal year and individual contributions had also increased since the recession. He said it was too early to say whether the institute, which opened a new Renzo Piano-designed wing in 2009, would take on any new expansion projects, but added that “museums have to continue to think about the future, and we’re no exception.”

Asked about his own future and how long he planned to be in the job, given his age, he said he planned to stay “a very long time.” He added, “I wake up every morning anxious to be in the office and totally energized by this new position, and I have lots and lots of plans.'”
