This part of the Bridgewater Canal between Manchester and Runcorn was constructed between 1767 and 1776 It is considered to be the UK's first true canal as it only uses existing waterways as sources of water rather than navigation channels.
The canal has never closed and is the only UK canal that was never privatised and still in private ownership. However it no longer carries freight but is only used for leisure craft.
The Bridgewater Way is a s a major regeneration project which ultimately aims to provide a high quality route for walkers and cyclists over the complete 65km length of the Bridgewater Canal between Runcorn, Leigh and Manchester City Centre.
This "You Are Here" map shows the route between Sale and Stretford, which is the first part of the scheme and is 5km in length. The tow path has been upgraded and has seen a 360% increase in cycle usage.
