The Arundel Castle is currently a Grade 1 listed building, first established on Christmas Day, 1067 by Roger de Montgomery, who was the first to hold the earldom of Arundel (provided by Roger’s cousin, William the Conqueror). It was originally a fortified area to protect the land against invasion from France. It has been restored and remodeled during the 18th and 19th centuries, having received damage during the English Civil War.
Portions of the grounds have been open to the public since 1800, including the keep and gatehouse, and the gardens have been open to the public sincs 1854. Visitors today can visit the keep, castle, chapel and gardens, the restaurant and gift shop. Activities include a range of events in the grounds along with educational and private tours. This castle is available as a film location and for business events, conferences, private functions (weddings) and banquets.
The oldest feature at this castle is the motte, (an artificial mound, over 100 feet high from the dry moat, and constructed in 1068) followed by the gatehouse (constructed in 1070).
