There is a sign, just west of The Grand Griz, telling us of the large bronze grizzly placed at the west edge of The Oval, the centre of the campus. He has greeted students, faculty and visitors to the campus since his unveiling in 1969.

It was the university's basketball team which first named themselves "The Grizzlies" in 1923. They were originally known as "The Bears", using a live mascot, a practice which continued into the 1960s. Since that time all the sports teams have adopted the name " The Grizzlies", including the "Lady Griz" for the women's basketball team, one of the most successful women's basketball programs in the country.

The men's and women's basketball teams play their home games in Dahlberg Arena, while the Football Griz have played in Washington–Grizzly Stadium since 1986.

The Grand Griz, sculpted in 1968-69 by faculty artist Rudy Autio, was unveiled during homecoming ceremonies in 1969 to a large and appreciative audience. He stands atop a large circular concrete plinth within a circle of more than 1,000 brick pavers donated by alumni, faculty and friends of the university. He is at the western edge of "The Oval", a large promanade begun in 1898, around which the the university campus was built. He was created entirely through the generosity of private donations.
THE GRAND GRIZ
In 1968 University of Montana alumni commissioned faculty artist Rudy Autio to sculpt UM'S mascot, The Grizzly Bear. From its location on the Ryman Memorial Mall, the beloved bronze landmark with the picturesque main hall as a backdrop greets visitors at the official entrance to campus. Surrounding the statue is Centennial Circle, whose bricks bear the names of UM alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends.
