In 2014 the early part of the Tour de France cycle race was held in Yorkshire - Strange but true.

The first day of the race started in the City of Leeds and there were many celebrations held to commemorate the event.

Also in order to celebrate the the event many items of street furniture we painted in the colours of the jerseys worn by the leaders of the race.

The event was also used to try and encourage people to take up cycling, both as a healthy activity, and secondly as a sustainable form of transport.

Each of the four boxes have kept their colours and also have a map of a cycle route in the area together wit a QR code to download the map on to a phone app. The routes are graded from an easy flat route suitable to families, to the full 190 km of the first day's route.

The significance of the 4 colours is as follows.

Yellow jersey (maillot jaune)
Awarded to the rider with the lowest aggregated time after each stage

Green jersey (maillot vert)
The green jersey points competition was established more than 60 years ago for the most consistent finisher. Competition rules mean it’s weighted towards sprinters – more points are on offer on flat stages than medium mountain, high mountain and individual TT stages.

Polka dot jersey
Red polka dots denote the best climber, defined by the rider who accumulates the most points cresting hills and mountains at the front of the race.

White jersey
Awarded to the best young rider in the general classification. To be eligible for the €20,000 prize, riders must be aged 25 or under.
