The hydroelectric power plant of Wyhlen used to have a fish ladder before, but it was not as successful as desired. The situation of the currents, the inclination and the narrow basins let not that many fish pass this obstacle. In 2005 it was replaced by the first fish elevator in the High-Rhine area. When the elevator fyke has enough fish inside, it is lifted between four and seven meters, depending on the water level, then the fish are freed into the upper water. The interval between lifts is from one to three hours. At this location the fish lift transports more fish than a traditional fish ladder.
River/Waterway: Rhine
