It officially opened in 1972 by initiative of a group of citizens as a result of a great discovery in the area, where they found the star piece of the museum, ‘The Efeb’, a 1.54 metre high bronze sculpture of a boy that dates back to the first century. This figure still preserves all its parts and is in very good condition.
The fine arts section occupies the top floors of the palace and contains the works of many painters and sculptors, as well as valuable works with precious metals. The collection is completed with a room dedicated exclusively to the Antequera-born painter Cristobal Toral and another two rooms of ethnological content.
