Kakadu National Park in Alligators Rivers Region in the Northern Territory of Australia is about 7600 square miles large. It has many different landscape types such as tidal flats, flood plains, hills and rocky country. Accordingly, the number of different plant and animal species is very high.
The region has been inhabited by Aboriginal people for at least 20,000 years and possibly even much longer. Accordingly, the region is of great cultural significance, for example at the over 5,000 rock art sites.
The region is protected as a national park since 1999.
