The railway station is a yellow building south of the old village center of Herten.
This segment of the railway line Oberrheinbahn opened in 1856. Herten was in some distance north of the layout of the rails, so a stop was not considered there at first.
The population of Herten filed a petition for a railway station in 1862, supported by four neighboring villages, but this was refused first. After several years of negotiations a temporary stop was erected in 1874. In 1875 finally the station building was constructed.
Today the formerly free area between the village and the station has been overbuilt by a residential zone.
Today the is one train every hour to Basel and Waldshut, every 30 minutes during rush hours.
