MONTANA'S STATESMAN
Mike Mansfield was the longest-serving majority leader in the U.S. Senate when he retired in 1976. After earning degrees at UM, he taught history here until he was elected to Congress in 1942. Altogether he served 45 years in the House and Senate and as Ambassador to Japan. The University Library and U.S.-Asian Relations Study Center bear both his and his wife's name.

This sign will be found just off the sidewalk leading to the main entrance of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield. One of the newest buildings on campus, this is the third library to be build here. The other two still stand, each repurposed and recycled.
