Perhaps as early as the first half of the 15th century the owners of the Potštejn domain built an aristocratic estate with a fortress to replace the run-down castle on the hill above the small town; the remains of this fortress can be identified today in the cellar of the chateau. The growth in the importance of the estate and fortress required substantial expansion of the fortress and reconstruction in the Renaissance style.

Vznik zámku v Potštejne je spojen s rokem 1746, kdy panství Potštejn získal hrabe Jan Ludvík Harbuval Chamaré. Jan Ludvík na míste starší zástavby vystavel jednopatrový barokní zámek s vysokou mansardovou strechou.

Jan Antonín, poslední mužský clen potštejnské vetve rodu, zemrel v roce 1849. Snatkem s Alžbetou, dcerou Jana Antonína, prešel zámek s panstvím do držení Prokopa Jana Dobrenského z Dobrenic. Tomuto rodu byl zámek na základe Benešových dekretu v roce 1945 zkonfiskován. Po roce 1989 zámek prešel do soukromých rukou, nekolikrát zmenil majitele a docházelo k chátrání objektu.
V roce 2004 ponicený zámek získali manželé Nováckovi, kterí jej postupne renovují. Došlo k úpravám vnitrních prostor a okolí zámku, revitalizován byl i zámecký park. Objekt byl zprístupnen verejnosti v roce 2006.
